How to work with WebDAV in various operating systems?

Use of WebDAV is necessary to manage the files of your web presence hosted by Knipp. WebDAV is an open standard for the transmission of files over the Internet, secured by SSL. It has replaced FTP, which was previously used by Knipp for this purpose. Management of files is very convenient now for you, since you can access your data like on an online hard disk.
There are several ways to use WebDAV. The method of choice depends on the operating system running on your local computer. Below we guide you through the setup for the most important operating systems.

Windows™

To easily access your files using WebDAV, we recommend using a free program called BitKinex.
The setup process consists of the following steps:
  • After installation of the program, the connection to the server has to be configured. To do so, click on "Http/WebDAV" within the BitKinex window using the right mouse button and select "New" and "Http/WebDAV".

  • Next the name of the connection is entered (this name can be chosen freely).

  • Now a dialogue opens which contains some fields you have to fill in. The "Server address" is the WebDAV server, XXX-prod.farm.knipp.de/webdav/. Make sure to choose "SSL" as the connection type ("Security"), this is mandatory. Enter the user name ("User") and "Password" as appropriate. Please do not close this dialogue yet.

  • Choose "Site Map" from the options tree on the left hand side. Correct the "Path" such that it reads "/webdav/": Click the entry and edit it in the text field below the list. Then click "Update" and "OK".

  • It is now possible to open a new connection by double-clicking the connection name you have chosen. This opens a new window with an explorer-like interface where you can exchange files between the local computer and the web server.

Linux/Gnome

  • When using Gnome, access of WebDAV is possible via Nautilus. Choose "Connect to Server..." from the "File" menu.

  • A dialogue opens where you have to enter details about the connection. In the drop-down menu "Service type", choose "Secure WebDAV (HTTPS)". Enter the WebDAV server XXX-prod.farm.knipp.de/webdav/ in the field "Server" and "/webdav/" in the field "Folder". Your user name in the format firstname.lastname should go in the field "User Name". Close the dialogue by clicking "Connect".

  • With these settings it is possible to work with the contents on the server as usual.

Linux/KDE

  • When using KDE, it is easiest to do the administration using Konqueror. To do so enter the address webdavs://XXX-prod.farm.knipp.de/webdav/, followed by the return key.

  • A dialogue opens which allows you to enter your user name and password. Fill in your credentials and click "OK".

  • It is now possible to work with the contents on the server as usual.

Mac OS

  • Start the Finder program.

  • Then use Command-K to open the "Connect To Server" dialogue.

  • Enter the "Server Address" webdavs://XXX-prod.farm.knipp.de/webdav/ and click "Connect".

  • Fill in the user's "Name" and "Password" and click "OK".

  • Accept the certificate by clicking "Continue".

  • It is now possible to work with the files as usual.
